The parties that entered 56 seated parliament are Democratic Rally (DISY) 27.77% - 17 seats; Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) 22.34% - 15 seats, Democratic Party (DIKO) 11.29% - 9 seats, National Popular Front (ELAM) 6.78% - 4 seats; Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK) 6.72% - 4 seats; Democratic Front (DIPA) 6.10% - 4 seats; and Cyprus Green Party 4.41% - 3 seats.

Nilgün Arısan Eralp holds a B.S. degree in Economics from Middle East Technical University, M.A. degree in Economic Development from Leicester University and M.Sc. degree in European Studies from London School of Economics.

Eralp worked as an advisor from 1987 to 1996 in several senior public authorities including Ministry of State in charge of EU Affairs and Deputy Prime Ministry, and Prime Ministry of Turkey. From 1990 to 1992, Eralp worked as an expert in State Planning Organization, Directorate General for EU Affairs. In 1996 Eralp coordinated the 'Information Network Project for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises on Customs Union' jointly financed by the Economic Development Foundation (İKV) and the European Commission. Between 1997 and 2000, Eralp functioned as the Head of Department of Policies and Harmonization in the Directorate General for the EU Affairs at State Planning Organization. After leaving this position , Eralp served as the Director of National Programme in the Secretariat General for the European Union Affairs (EUSG) until 2009. Throughout this period Eralp has been a Member of Academic Board in European Research Centre, Ankara University on behalf of the EUSG. Eralp has lectured in several universities on EU and Turkish and EU relations and has several publications on the same topic.

Nilgün Arısan Eralp has been working at TEPAV since 2009 as the Director of the European Union Institute.

In 2008, six bicommunal Technical Committees were established by the Greek Cypriot (GC) and Turkish Cypriot (TC) community leaders to ‘address issues that affect the day-to-day life of people, through encouraging and facilitating greater interaction and understanding between the two communities’; since then, six more Technical Committees have been added to the list. There are currently 12 bicommunal Technical Committees, which are unique mechanisms run under UN auspices, operated by Greek and Turkish Cypriots, to address the shared challenges and aims for Cyprus.

Following Guterres' dinner with the Cypriot leaders in New York, an agreement has been reached to continue informal meetings with the participation of the Guarantor powers. The participation of the UK might not be at the same level as the other two, as the official position of the Turkish/Turkish Cypriot side has been for the four-party meeting rather than five. The sides have also committed to work on opening new crossing points. So the upcoming multi-party meeting is being regarded differently by the sides. While the Greek/Greek Cypriot side declares that they are interested in resuming talks on bi-communal, bi-zonal federation; the Turkish/Turkish Cypriot side insists that the old model is dead and they will only discuss resuming talks on the so called "two-state model". The two Cypriot leaders have agreed to meet for a "social dinner" at the presence of the UN Secretary General. The expectations are low as sides have shown no signs of departure from their respective positions. While the Turkish Cypriot side is adamant on their so called "two states" position, which is vocally and openly supported by the Turkish government, the Greek Cypriot side has been consistent expressing their commirment to a bicommunal, bizonal federation as stipulated by the numerous UN resoutions.

The negative developments in the Middle East is regarded as a distracting factor for the attempts to put the talks back on trace in Cyprus, not only because the international community is focused on the developments there, but also because in a everchanging political context, the regional and international players shift towards reassessing their positions in the region. The elephant in the room is Turkey and how it regards itself vis-a-vis other players with the new developments. Greece is pushing for some progress in the Cyprus problem within the framework of improving its relations with Turkey. However, on the other hand, we see no positive steps by Nicos Christodoulides towards the Turkish Cypriots as he had previously promised. Indeed, this is a dinner that will finally bring the Cypriot sides together with the UN Secretary General but we hardly see any spark for a love affair at this stage.

UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar has arrived on the island and started her work by paying a visit to the Cypriot leaders. This new initiative to revive the talks, which collapsed in Crans Montana conference in 2017, is defined as an attempt to find a "common ground" for the formal talks to start. In this episode of Nicosia Uncut, Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykalli question the endgame of this new initiative as there is no sign for the sides to shift their diametrically opposed positions. Supported by Turkey, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has been elected to pursue "a two-state solution" and officially rejected to get engaged in any initiative based on a federal model. Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides who was part of the Greek Cypriot team during the collapse in 2017 and supported by the "rejectionist parties" in his election campaign continues to express his commitment to the federal model as defined in the relevant UN resolutions and reject to discuss anything outside these parameters. In a parallel move, the Republic of Cyprus government has announced 14 points of "good-will gesture" towards the Turkish Cypriots before the arrival of the new envoy. Political establishments on the both sides of the divide fail to address the division of the country while the forces of status quo are deepening the divide. Civil society and citizen initiatives are working tirelessly, albeit in limited capacity, to work to bring people together across the divide. The Turkish Cypriot leadership, now fully aligned with the Turkish government, is unpleasantly consistent in their rhetoric and actions in rejecting cooperation and a common future; the Greek Cypriot leadership is unpleasantly inconsistent between what they say and what they do. The Greek Cypriot leadership and the political elite insist that they support a federal solution but their actions (or inactions) contribute into deepening the divide. Turkey as usual, continue to interfere and dominate the Turkish Cypriot affairs in an extent that has not been seen in the past. Turkish Cypriots are now turning their attention to the local elections that will take place on 25 December 2022, the Greek Cypriots are busy following the campaigns for the presidential elections.

Harsh statements by the Russian Ambassador in Nicosia, upon the decision of the Republic of Cyprus to close its airspace as this is also a common decision of the EU, created a resentment among various circles. Anastasiades government, however, is trying to go below the radar instead of taking a determined position against the Russian invasion.

Since the collapse of the talks in Crans Montana, Anastasiades government has dedicated all its foreign policy capital in isolating Turkey through various diplomatic tools. Apart from a number of regional agreements (which were highlighted with tantamount ceremonies), the Republic of Cyprus has used its EU membership to push, unsuccessfully, for European sanctions against Turkey. The Greek Cypriot mainstream media did not hesitate to portray such "glorious diplomatic victories" on their front pages, radio and TV stations were filled with strategic experts praising government's strategic steps in the international arena. It seems that all went down the drain after the appointment of the new foreign minister who publicly declared the end of this policy in favour of confidence building measures. All those who had rush to teach patriotic lessons to the critics of RoC's impotent alienation strategy turned a blind eye to this change. The Turkish Cypriot economy is badly hit following the meltdown of the Turkish lira. Being an import oriented economy based on services, economy in the north was already fragile due to the pandemic. The depreciation of the Turkish lira affected northern part of the island even more than Turkey since the slider at the volume of trade is almost maxed on the import side, whereas the Turkish Cypriot exports are almost non-existent. In this episode of Nicosia Uncut, Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykallı also talk about the EU's Green Line Regulation which regulates the crossing of people, goods and services across the division line and the EU-aid to the Turkish Cypriots. Long queues at the crossing points continue and sides fail to develop effective remedies to allow easy crossing across the line. In the meantime, RoC's unrealistic expectations to implement EU sanctions on Turkey collapsed in Brussels.

In this sixth episode of Figure It, Sapienta Economics Director Fiona Mullen discusses the famous squeaky cheese of Cyprus, known as hellim in Turkish and halloumi in Greek, with the former president of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and current MP with the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Fikri Toros. In April of this year the European Commission “registered Χαλλούμι/Halloumi/Hellim as a protected designation of origin (PDO)”. This means that only hellim/halloumi produced in Cyprus “according to the product specification” may now use the registered name. We also discuss the obstacles put in the way of the Green Line regulation (European Council Regulation 866/2004) and how these longstanding issues prevent intra-island trade form reaching its full potential.

Dr. Sophia Papastavrou is a citizen of Canada and Cyprus and spent her formative years in Dominican Republic and Ghana before immigrating to Canada. She holds the role of Gender Technical Specialist with a humanitarian organization and recently received her Ph.D. in Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. Her dissertation entitled: Women’s Organizations for Peace: Moving Beyond the Rhetoric of the Cyprus Problem was the result of over 7 years of field research on the island. She has previously worked with the OSCE Mission to Croatia, the World Bank, and the United Nations, World Vision International and World Vision Canada. Sophia was a speaker at TEDx Nicosia Women in 2015 and recently, worked with women’s civil society to co- create the first White Book of Best Practice on UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in Cyprus. She was selected as part of the She-Experts initiative by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS) aiming to enhance the visibility and impact of women in their professional capacity. She is a member of the Mediterranean Women's Mediation Network & Women, Peace Security Network -Canada. Geographical expertise: Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa, South East Asia.

Turkish Cypriot minority coalition finally collapsed the day after this episode was recorded. Both Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus have presidential elections in 2023 and the tension around the waters of Cyprus is likely to rise again. Turkey put its diplomatic skills at test on multiple fronts but the prospects for Turkish-American and Turkish-Russian relations do not look very promising. In the meantime, both communities are feeling the economic effects of the pandemic, Turkish Cypriots more, with the Turkish Lira continue to lose value against major currencies. At least, we have got our crossings back, Cypriots can now travel across the Green Line. “My name is Anastasia Demetriadou and I’m 25. I am based in Nicosia and I am a singer/ songwriter. I studied at the University of Cyprus, in the department of English Studies and Translation. My greatest passion in life, is music and storytelling. I also have my personal musical project, called Nama Dama. The project was created back in 2019, when I first began sharing my musical stories with the world. The main purpose of the project, is to create an artistic world that can bring literature, poetry, acting and music together. I named this world, The World Above the Ceiling: A creative space that aims to enrich the senses and liberate the mind. My songs are therefore poems or short narrations, accompanied by music and vocal expressivity.

My music is an experimental amalgam of classical, folk, rock and soul. I have recently published my first concept EP, Confessions to my Songbird, which combines both storytelling and music. Additionally, I write short stories and take music therapy courses in my free time. What I wish the most, is to reach to a certain point, where I am able to heal myself and the people around me through music, storytelling, movement, or any other artistic media that improves both our mental and physical health. For me, music is the purest form of magic, as it has healing and spiritual properties. That is what I also try to incorporate in my own music, by creating ambient, experimental sounds that can take the listener to another world and dimension, where he/she can experience something entirely different and learn something new. In the future, I would also love to narrate my short stories to the public, as well as write music for them.”

Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykallı discuss Cyprus problem ahead of the informal 5+1 conference: expected strategy, basic assumptions, diplomatic leaks, involvement of the internationals, and how corruption is affecting the course of the peace process in Cyprus.

Before 2004, the Cyprus solution process was mainly driven by the international community. Following the rejection of the Annan Plan, so-called "Cypriot-led process" was the name the game. Failure in Crans Montana effectively ended this period. Now, the international community and non-Cypriot actors are once more the main actors in the solution process. In order to converge positions, "constructive ambiguity" is employed as a tool. Will this save the day or are we about to find ourselves before yet another train crash? What was the EU's failure last summer, particularly during Borrell's visit? How did we react to that in our 4th episode which was aired on 3/7/2020? The report focused on the differences and similarities between native Turkish Cypriots and Turkish immigrants who came to the island after 1974, on issues such as identity perception, attitudes towards religion, democratic values, relations with Turkey and the Cyprus problem.
